Methodology
How DealFlow tracks the market
Trust starts with knowing how the data is made. The pages below spell out what we include, what we exclude, how we classify, and how often each dataset refreshes. If a dataset on the site doesn't have a methodology page yet, that's a gap we're working to close — flag it at hello@dealflow.energy.
Deal Database
→Which transactions get tracked, how we classify them, and how we handle disclosed vs. undisclosed values.
- Scope:
- M&A, project finance, PPAs, tax credit transfers — US clean energy, 2023 → present.
- Refresh:
- Updated multiple times per week; weekly cut on Mondays.
Change of Control
→How we identify executive moves that count, how seniority is assigned, and how net-flow league tables are computed.
- Scope:
- C-suite, MD, partner, and SVP+ moves at developers, IPPs, lenders, infra funds, law firms, and policy bodies.
- Refresh:
- Updated weekly; surfaced in the Monday newsletter.
League Tables
→Inclusion rules for lenders, law firms, advisors, and engineers — including how we de-dupe roles, count partial credit, and exclude announcement-only roles.
- Scope:
- Lenders, lead arrangers, tax equity, sponsor & lender counsel, M&A and financial advisors, independent engineers.
- Refresh:
- Recomputed automatically as the deal database updates.
Power 100
→The weighted LeaderRank algorithm, the input signals, the platform-budget normalization, and what the ranking does (and does not) measure.
- Scope:
- Public Twitter, LinkedIn, and Bluesky engagement; podcast guest appearances; conference speaking invitations.
- Refresh:
- Recomputed weekly (Sunday cut).
Cross-cutting principles
- Source attribution is non-negotiable. Every deal and every move links to at least one primary source — a press release, SEC filing, law-firm announcement, or trade publication. If a tip can't be independently confirmed, it doesn't ship.
- We publish corrections. Errors get fixed in the database and noted in the next newsletter. Email corrections to hello@dealflow.energy.
- US-focused, by design. We track US clean energy deals and the people moving across US firms. International deals appear only when a US counterparty is involved.
- No paid inclusion. No firm pays to appear in the database, league tables, or Power 100, and there is no path to do so. Sponsorship of the newsletter (when offered) is disclosed in the issue itself.
